Along with an unprecedented decline
in birthrate and growth in the elderly population, Japan is also facing
the issues of globalization, decentralization and the advancement of the
information society. To deal with these issues, Japan must understand its
social systems from legal and political perspectives. By developing the
knowledge and intellect required for deep insight, our graduates can
accurately identify the problems that must be dealt with in modern Japan
and have ability to solve these problems and the will to contribute to the
working world. Furthermore, we aim to search for the ideal social
order.
Economic activity is the basis of
capitalism and holds the power to change society, for better and for
worse. We consider the effects of economic power on society while
comparing regions, historical facts, truths and environments. Our 20th
Century mass consumption society has had a huge impact on the world’s
natural environment. By keenly analyzing these economic activities and
raising relevant issues, this department searches for the ideal global
economy and best direction for Japan in the 21st Century, the Century of
the Environment.
The Environmentally Responsible Corporate
Social Responsibility Education Program initiative of the Faculty of
Politics and Economics has been selected by the Education Good Practice
program.
The 2008 initiative by the Department of Politics and
Economics, The Environmentally Responsible Corporate Social Responsibility
Education Program, was selected by the Distinctive University Education
Support Program (Education Good Practice) of the Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
The Faculty of Politics and Economics strived to
improve the quality of education and one initiative was the introduction
of academic skills into First Year. One of these was the Environment
Program, a minor subject available since 2007. The initiative is a program
that developed the Environment Program and aims to develop graduates who
can meet the needs of modern society. The Faculty of Politics and
Economics strives to use this initiative to further improve the quality of
education.
The educational philosophy of the Faculty of
Politics and Economics is to instill both the foundations and expert
knowledge of law, politics and economics in order to develop graduates who
have a global view and can contribute to society in the various public and
private areas. To that end, the Environment Program was introduced as a
trial minor course to organize the three fields of law, politics and
economics around the environment in 2007. The course aims to further
materialize the department’s educational philosophies by producing
graduates who can help solve environmental issues that are worsening and
increasing in number.
This initiative adds the perspective of Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) education to the Environment Program. The
completion of selected related courses and assigned courses makes it
possible to systematically and effectively study CSR, which is at the crux
of environmental issues.
Furthermore, from First Year, we devise ways to raise
consciousness about employment, define the things that need be studied at
university, and improve student motivation for learning. There is a strong
desire to understand how much is being contributed to social justice, the
environment, and other social issues, as opposed to the sheer pursuit of
profits, in the current economic activities of businesses.
When one considers society’s strong concerns and
expectations for CSR, we can see the need to raise the quality and
contents of environment education in schools, deepen the interest of
students who are concerned about the environment and develop graduates who
can work in the economy while maintaining a high sense of duty, work
values, and a social consciousness in the overwhelming number of
employment opportunities in private enterprises. This initiative develops
students that have the ability to respond to these societal demands and
can discover the meaning of society through social action.
