【School of Bekka, Intensive Japanese Language Program】2020 Fall Semester Activity Report 1: Class Scenes

For the fall semester in 2020, Bekka has adopted a hybrid system of distance and face-to-face classes every other week, with all possible measures taken to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 infection. Although a state of emergency was declared for the last two weeks of classes in January 2021, it was an expected situation and face-to-face classes were smoothly switched to remote ones. It was a pity that the last classes were remote ones and we could not finish them in the classrooms, but we could see the Bekka students in good spirits on the PC screens. In addition to their Japanese language skills, the Bekka students acquired online learning skills such as ZOOM and Teams, which are indispensable for online classes. Some of them will remain in the Bekka program from April 2021 to study Japanese, some will continue their education at vocational schools, universities, or graduate schools, and some will start their professional careers as working adults in Japan. Bekka students are expected to be active in their fields in the future.

1.A face-to-face class scene

Students were required to wear masks, and teachers were required to wear masks and face shields. The desks were placed at wide intervals, and classes were held with windows open. We took thorough measures to avoid the "three Cs (Closed spaces with poor ventilation, Crowded places with many people nearby, and Close-contact setting such as close-range conversations)." Bekka students who experienced a pandemic in a foreign country seemed to have learned a lot from the infectious disease countermeasures implemented in Japan. Students who were not feeling well could attend classes online instead of forcing themselves to come to the classrooms. Students in the monitor, students in the classroom, and faculty members all work together to create a face-to-face class with a simultaneous interactive online class. This was a first attempt and took some time to get used to, but we made a great effort and implemented it as one way to make everyone feel safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2.A class scene in teaching on-line learning skills

During the face-to-face classes, homeroom teachers and teachers of various subjects taught on-line learning skills to Bekka students in the PC classroom. Each student was carefully taught how to download, complete, and upload their assignments. Although I.T. skills vary greatly depending on country of origin and individual, the advanced students for on-line learning taught the beginners in Japanese. By teaching each other, the Bekka students were able to make many friends in the class. By the end of the fall semester, all Bekka students were able to acquire a certain level of on-line learning skills in order to attend classes.

3.A class scene of the compulsory subject "Japanese"

Bekka students in the intermediate Japanese language class are enjoying their "Japanese" class through the PC screen. Following the teacher's instructions, they are expressing their opinions in Japanese in front of the whole class, doing group works, and writing in the chat room. Since the learning tools differ depending on the subject, the Bekka students might check each other every day on LINE and chat in Teams, saying "ZOOM or Teams?" Even though the students come from different countries and speak different native languages, they all share the same goal of studying Japanese in the current situation with COVID-19 pandemic.

4.A class scene of the required subject "Japanese Affairs"

Bekka students in the elementary Japanese class learned study skills for taking face-to-face and online classes, in use of their native languages, English, and Japanese. In the last "Japanese Affairs" class of the fall semester, the students learned about "Avoiding three Cs in the current situation with COVID-19 pandemic." The students in the elementary Japanese class got used to the online class and actively participated in the class in Japanese, while muting the voice when not speaking.
