The awards ceremony for the 26th National High School and International Student Essay Contest was held on Monday, November 4th, and two students from the Bekka, Intensive Japanese Language Program, were recognized for their outstanding achievements. This year's contest invited submissions on one of the following four themes: 1)"What does it mean to be an international bridge builder?" 2)"My ideas for multicultural coexistence." 3)"My experience with intercultural exchange." 4)"What I can do to contribute to society." A total of 2,399 essays were submitted, including 286 entries in the international student category. Students in the Bekka, which focuses on intermediate-to-advanced Japanese language learners aiming for JLPT N2 or higher, participate annually as part of their curriculum. Among the many excellent submissions, Fu Guanwen (China) won the Yomiuri Shimbun Prize, and Nguyen Minh Ngoc (Vietnam) received the Encouragement Award. Congratulations to both winners! While these awards are a significant achievement for the recipients, the process of essay writing also served as a valuable opportunity for all participating students to reflect deeply on topics such as intercultural exchange and global contributions. Once again, congratulations to all involved!
Interview with the award
Yomiuri Shimbun Award
Mx. FU GUANWEN (China)
I chose Theme 4, "The Social Contribution I Can Make," and wrote an essay about "water and sewage systems." I expressed my desire to contribute to improving water infrastructure in my home country, China, by applying Japanese water usage and recycling technologies. With the issue of potable water becoming increasingly severe, I believe my efforts can be a small but meaningful step toward resolving this problem. Through the process of thinking and revising my essay, I was also able to improve my Japanese language skills.
Encouragement Award
Mx. NGUYEN MINH NGOC (Vietnam)
I chose Theme 4, "The Social Contribution I Can Make," and wrote an essay about "the decline in reading habits." Since the term "decline in reading" has become more common in recent years, I expressed my hope for the spread of reading weeks. While the writing style and level of essays vary from person to person, the instructors at the Bekka provided guidance tailored to each individual. Writing about a topic I was genuinely interested in allowed my thoughts and expressions to expand naturally, making it easier to visualize and articulate my ideas.
